FAQ

What People Want to Know

Can we just repair the existing jail?

This option was considered; however, the infrastructure beneath the existing jail requires extensive work, necessitating the demolition of a significant portion of the facility. This would negate any potential cost benefits. Furthermore, Walsh County currently benefits from being grandfathered under certain Department of Corrections (DOC) requirements regarding space and recreational areas. However, renovations or new construction would trigger the need to comply with these updated standards, resulting in the need for additional space and additional expenses.

What will happen with the existing jail if a new jail is built?

The existing Sheriff's Office will be demolished and space will be used as a parking lot.

Why isn't the County using the Wells Fargo Bank building?

The building is old, not structurally sound, filled with asbestos, and the roof leaks. Also, there is no parking.

Why should we build better housing for inmates?

This isn't about building better housing for inmates. This is about saving taxpayer dollars, providing a safer work environment for our staff, protection for the public, and liability protection for Walsh County. Additionally, the County is responsible for the health and safety of jail inmates and must provide a safe and humane environment, but it doesn't mean the jail should be overly comfortable. Inmate accommodations will be simple and meet state codes.

Who spends the most time in the jail?

The staff who manage the inmate population: 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Shouldn't inmates with mental health issues be in the hospital instead of jail?

The state hospital is at capacity so many people end up in county jail until bed becomes available.

Will the new facility allow for inmates from other counties as a new source of revenue?

The proposed new facility will be built to meet Walsh County needs but will accept inmates from other counties when able which would generate revenue.

Is there a cap on the sales tax?

Yes. Any patron or user paying a tax imposed by Walsh County Ordinance 2025-1 in excess of $25.00 upon any single transaction of one or more items may obtain a credit or refund of the excess tax at the time of purchase directly from the vendor or request a refund of the excess tax payment by filing a request for refund upon the forms provided by the Tax Commissioner.
